image Cliff and Elizabeth White
(Richmond, Virginia)

My grandfather served his country all his life. In 1932, at the age of 14 he attended the Citizen’s Military Training Camp and at 17 became a member of the Virginia Protective Force. In 1936 he enlisted in the Virginia National Guard and a few years later joined the Richmond Police Department. With the outbreak of WWII, Cliff volunteered for active duty in the U.S. Army, but was ordered to remain in his current positions with the Virginia Protective Force, Richmond Police and the Richmond Grays Militia to protect the home front. In 1945 his National Guard unit was activated into the U.S. Army and he was sent to Fort Gordon, Georgia as a firearms specialist to train Military Police and soldiers. Before Cliff was to be shipped overseas, the war ended and he returned to his duties in Virginia. In 1954, Cliff was promoted to a plain clothes investigator with the juvenile division and was actively studying law to become an attorney. On August 19, 1954, Cliff suffered a heart attack and died in the line of duty. He was given a combination military and police funeral with full honors. My sweet grandmother, whom he left behind never remarried and raised three boys on her own. She continued to be an active member of her church and instilled in all of us the love of Christ and a love of country. Cliff and Elizabeth White truly were American Patriots!
